Hiking, Backpacking

Forest Service trails in the Sierra: Leg-stretching hikes less than one-mile include Rainbow, Tallac Historic Site, Trail of the Washoe, Forest Tree, Smokey's Lake of the Sky. Longer, more challenging are Fallen Leaf, Mt. Tallac, Glen Alpine, Clark Angora Lakes, Hawley Grade, Meiss, Echo Lake (1/2 mile to 6 miles). Call Forest Service, 530-644-6048.

Nature Hikes

Free. Meet at Nature Center in Coloma, first Saturday of month, 9-11 am, Hwy. 49, Marshall Gold Discovery State Historic Park. Call first to sign up, 530-621-1224.

American River Water Education Center

Folsom Dam -- Learn more about the American River and water conservation in a self-guided tour of the Center's displays and interactive exhibits. The Education Center brings to life the rugged canyons and life-giving waters of the American River, and open free during afternoon hours on most weekdays. Folsom City Zoo Sanctuary

Much to see. Expansion under way during summer/fall 2006 for the tiger exhibit, barnowl barn & flight aviary, house & cat garden for feral cats, the wild canid exhibit housing wolves, coyotes and wolf-dog hybrids, the Macaw house, and a larger cage for parrots. Gold Bug Park & Mine

Open last week of March thru October. Park grounds are open daily from 8:30-5pm for park use and hiking trails. Gold Bug Mine, Stamp Mill, museums and Hattie's Gift Shop are open from 10-4pm daily. Self-guided tours of the mine are enhanced by audio equipment, featuring tapes in English, German, French and Japanese. Group tours available. El Dorado County Historical Museum

Fountain-Tallman Museum

Marshall Gold Discovery Museum

Apple Hill - Fall season - Some Ranches Year-Round

Cantare Chorale Christmas Concert Celebration * Five choirs will be singing selected songs at this Christmas Concert then at the finale more than 120 voices will blend in harmony for the Messiah's Hallelujah Chorus No. 44 by George F. Handel. There is no ticket charge, but a free-will offering will gather donations for the Food Bank, the Upper Room and the Church of the Foothills Compassion ministry. All three charities are feeling the impact of the economy and are experiencing a downturn in funds, food and clothing for the needy. The concert starts at 6pm at Church of the Foothills, 2380 Merrychase Dr. (across the street from Blue Oak School) in Cameron Park. Again, the concert is free, but donations will be gladly accepted for the charities!

Independent Film * Titled "Frozen River" is about an upstate New York trailer mom lured into the world of illegal immigrant sumuggling when shee meets a Mohawk girl who lives on a reservation that straddles the U.S.-Canadian border. The film gets its name from smuggling illegal Chinese and Pakistani immigrants across the frozen St. Lawrence River. El Dorado County Fair * celebrates its 150th anniversary, 80 years of which have been in its current location on Placerville Drive in Placerville. A big celebration is being planned. The public is being asked to serve as docents to represent the fair for this historic year. The fair will be working on compiling historical data, photographs, and other information to be used for display and training of docents.
